DR Voice Type Privacy Policy
Effective October 15, 2026
Short version: DR Voice Type has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no servers. Your voice and your text stay on your iPhone, unless you choose to add your own Claude API key — then the text (never audio) of your dictations is sent to Anthropic to be polished.
What the app does with your voice
- When you start a dictation, the app listens through the microphone and turns your speech into text on your iPhone with Parakeet, an open speech-recognition model by NVIDIA. Apple's speech recognition also runs on your iPhone as a backup.
- The Parakeet model (about 450 MB) is downloaded once, over Wi-Fi, from Hugging Face (a public model host) when you first open the app. The download contains no information about you, and after that recognition needs no internet at all.
- If you choose Bahasa Indonesia, OpenAI's open Whisper speech model (about 632 MB) is downloaded once from Hugging Face the same way, and Indonesian speech is turned into text on your iPhone with it.
- With On-device only turned on (the default), recognition happens entirely on your iPhone. If you turn it off, Apple's speech service may process the audio under Apple's privacy policy.
- Audio is never saved and never sent to us. The microphone is only used during a listening session you start; the orange microphone indicator shows whenever it is on.
Text cleanup
- Free version: simple rules on your iPhone clean up the text. Pro: your iPhone's built-in on-device AI does it (or the simple rules on phones without it). Either way, nothing leaves your phone.
- Purchases: the one-time Pro unlock is handled entirely by Apple. The app only checks whether Pro is unlocked; we never see your payment details.
- Optional Claude upgrade: if you paste your own Anthropic API key, the transcript text, the text just before your cursor (for context), and the words in your Dictionary are sent to Anthropic's API with your key to be cleaned up. Audio is never sent. Anthropic handles this data under Anthropic's privacy policy and the terms of your Anthropic account. Your key is stored in your iPhone's Keychain and is only sent to Anthropic. Remove the key in Settings at any time to stop this.
The keyboard
- Typing, swipe typing and word suggestions run entirely inside the keyboard on your phone. The keyboard makes no network requests and does not record what you type.
- If you fix a misheard name right after dictating (for example change "odigent" to "Audigent"), the keyboard saves that fix to your Dictionary and Snippets on your phone so it's spelled right next time. Nothing else you type is kept.
- "Allow Full Access" lets the keyboard pass text to and from the DR Voice Type app on your phone (the dictated text, and the text before your cursor so punctuation and capitals fit). It is needed only for voice.
What is stored on your iPhone
- Your settings, Dictionary and Snippets.
- History: your last 100 dictations, so you can find or re-insert them. You can clear it any time in the History tab.
- All of this stays on your device and is deleted when you delete the app.
- iCloud sync: if you're signed in to iCloud, your Dictionary and Snippets are kept the same on your iPhone and the DR Voice Type Mac app through your own iCloud account (Apple's iCloud key-value storage). We can't see this data; it's covered by Apple's privacy policy. Your dictations and history are never synced.
What we collect
We (the developer) receive none of your data. We don't run servers, we don't use analytics or advertising SDKs, and we don't track you across apps or websites. The only ways data leaves your phone are described above, all under your control: the optional Claude upgrade (text sent to Anthropic with your own key), Apple's speech service if you turn off "On-device only", and your Dictionary and Snippets in your own iCloud if you use iCloud. The one-time Parakeet model download sends no information about you.
Children
The app is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
